Position: Commercial Underwriter
As a Commercial Underwriter, you will play a key role in managing a diverse book of business, focusing on profitability and growth. Your responsibilities will include reviewing new and renewal business, assessing coverage risks, preparing quotes, and answering coverage inquiries within your designated authority. You'll have the opportunity to build strong, collaborative relationships with agents, driving positive business flow. In this position, you will work independently, exercising your judgment and expertise, with the flexibility to work either hybrid or remotely, depending on your location and the role's requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Achieve Profitable Outcomes:
Deliver successful results on less complex niche business through effective risk selection by:
Analyzing and pricing business profitably with clear terms and conditions.
Reviewing inspection reports, location details, and financial data to identify new or unresolved risks.
Communicating with Risk Control for inspections and service needs for insureds.
Implementing corrective actions on renewal accounts.
Promptly escalating referrals for additional review or approval by senior underwriters.
Meeting service expectations and regulatory compliance by timely releasing renewals and notices.
Drive Performance Indicators:
Take accountability for achieving key performance metrics within your portfolio by:
Fostering successful relationships with distribution partners through regular review calls and in-person meetings.
Collaborating with the distribution team to build a strong pipeline and resolve any issues or concerns.
Maintaining open communication with team members regarding the health of assigned agencies and market conditions.
Cultivate a High-Performing Culture:
Provide exceptional customer service and demonstrate strong business acumen.
Mentor and support staff throughout their career journeys.
Conduct peer audits and approve underwriting decisions for associates with lower authority levels.
Assist in training new hires and internal promotions through continuous mentoring and feedback.
Review, mentor, and approve referrals for lower authority level associates.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, or a related field preferred.
Insurance designation (e.g., CPCU, IIA) preferred or actively pursuing one.
Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in commercial underwriting, including one to two years in a property and casualty insurance company.
Recommended Qualifications:
Knowledge of terms, practices, processes, and regulations in the property and casualty insurance industry.
Ability to apply advanced underwriting concepts consistently.
Strong negotiating skills, sound judgment, and the ability to analyze and make decisions effectively.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for conveying information clearly.
Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with a customer service orientation.
Proficiency in Microsoft products, particularly Excel (including pivot tables and vlookups), for strategic analysis.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to manage a large volume of work and meet tight deadlines.
Compensation:
$48,600 - $81,000, commensurate with experience, plus bonus eligibility.
$53,400 - $89,000 for positions in CA, CT, MA, NJ, NY, and PA, also commensurate with experience, plus bonus eligibility.
