Student Support Specialist – AFSCME

 

 

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, creates and implements engagement, recovery, and retention strategies to assist in the enrollment of MPS students who are chronically absent or withdrawn for non-attendance. Student Engagement Specialists work directly and collaboratively with a caseload of individual students who are struggling with attendance and academic performance and have county involvement or are at risk for involvement. Specialists work across the spheres of home, school, and community, actively partnering with school staff, parents/guardians, and community agencies to provide the support needed for students to attend school regularly, engage in learning, and build a sense of belonging. Specialists track the levels of engagement with targeted students, respond to individual needs, document results, and fuel the motivation to learn. Specialists work as a liaison to facilitate communication and promote problem solving both at the individual student level and between home and school. Specialists should have knowledge of community services and be able to refer students to appropriate internal and external services when needed, in collaboration with school support staff. Specialists work collaboratively to define and outline roles to improve participation, performance, and success for individual students disenfranchised with school.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Meet with students on a regular basis, provide individualized response to students’ attendance, grades, and behavior, provide feedback and problem-solving measures to students, initiate ongoing communication with families, and implement efforts to engage youth in learning.
  • Collaborate with adults involved with the youth, such as teachers, case managers, counselors, and social workers, as well as developing community agency linkages.
  • Ongoing communication with school staff to gather and share information about student progress.
  • Contact parents/caregivers via phone, text, home visits, mail, and email to share information and to develop plans to re-engage or increase engagement and attendance of students in school.
  • Timely communications – respond to students, families, school personnel, phone messages within 24 hours.
  • Promote and support student achievement by providing social supports, student/family supports, and wellness supports to meet the social, emotional and health needs of program participants.
  • Assist students in learning processes; reinforces positive behavior, provide individual instruction, encourage socialization and good communication.
  • Monitor and supervise student activities; promote respect, support diversity, explain social norms and disciplinary consequences.
  • Monitors assigned students, and records data for academic and behavioral assessments; maintains files and keeps records of student progress and activities; assures all required written reports are completed and submitted timely.
  • Mediates conflicts and provides advocacy services for clients in their interactions with government and community agencies; verifies compliance with agreements and performance standards.
  • Communicates with parents/caregivers, students and school staff to convey pertinent information while maintaining confidentiality of personal information.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
  • Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
  • Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis
  • At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field; AND two (2) years of experience working with public education support programs.

 

Knowledge of:

· Applicable policies, procedures and regulations covering compulsory education.

· Rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Education, Hennepin County Be@School, and Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families.

· Principles of child psychology and behavior management techniques.

· Classroom policies, procedures and processes.

· Methods and techniques for working with students with special needs.

· Local community resources and regional community services programs.

· Principles of record keeping and records management.

· Safety rules and regulations.

 

Skill in:

· Monitoring and improving student behavior and learning skills.

· Assisting children and special needs students and assessing educational needs.

· Maintaining composure and working effectively under stressful conditions.

· Administering educational and school support programs.

· Communicating effectively with children and families.

· Collaborating as a team member, with colleagues, staff, and community representatives.

· Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers, clients and community agencies.

· Effective verbal and written communication

 

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Minnesota State Driver’s License is required. Specific technical training and certification is required for some incumbents in this job class

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a classroom and a general office environment, with moderate physical requirements; requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. Jobs in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree, long periods of working with computers, and working with children.
