Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

Capabilities engineer will provide division-level engineering for optical fiber manufacturing. This will include leading our capabilities in the preform manufacturing process. Independent project assignments will include cost reduction, process and raw material optimization, engineered safety improvements, standards and governance among sites, and ensuring manufacturing readiness for new processes.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Champion fundamental engineering concepts to drive capability advancements in glassmaking processes. Identify, justify, and lead capacity, cost reduction, and process improvement projects that have division-wide implication.
  • Work between technology and plant manufacturing organizations to ensure smooth deployment of new technologies, products, and processes by identifying and leading implementation of required capabilities.
  • Collaborate with global manufacturing sites to coordinate and solve glassmaking-related issues and concerns.
  • Provide leadership with site-to-site standards and governance effort. This includes identifying, auditing, and driving compliance to governed process parameters across sites.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • 15-20% (+/-) in North America.
  • Some international travel may be required.

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+ hours per week.

  • M-F but may require weekends depending on travel schedules or job assignment.

 

Required Education:

  • B.S. in Engineering (Ceramics, Chemical, Materials or Mechanical preferred)

 

Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 4+ years’ experiences in manufacturing engineering, glass or material engineering is preferred.

 

Required Skills:

  • Strong data analysis and statistical skills. Experience with statistical packages such as Minitab and JMP. Strong computer skills, including ability to analyze data using Excel and Access.
  • Strong mastery of fundamental engineering concepts with demonstrated ability to apply to manufacturing problems.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work on an independent basis in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions both within and outside areas of expertise.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Provide disciplined project leadership in organization and management of all phases of small and large complex projects.
  • Able to collaborate with varied levels and functions within the organization, including manufacturing, technology, R&D, operations, procurement, IT, and supply chain.
  • Highly motivated, results oriented, and customer focused, with a high commitment level.

 

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of glass or ceramic manufacturing.
  • Prior experience moving a new product or process from development into manufacturing. Statistical analysis experience.
  • Six Sigma DMAIC experience.

 

Soft Skills:

  • Works well in a collaborative, team-based environment. Acts and makes decisions in the best interest of team. Possesses strong written and verbal communications skills. Personal initiative and commitment
  • Positive attitude, flexible and good work ethic

The range for this position is $91,633.00 - $125,996.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
