Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Sommelier to lead our wine program and create an exceptional and inviting experience for our valued patrons. As the Sommelier, you will be responsible for managing the wine program including selecting wines for the Wine Bar (on-premise), the Wine Cellar (off-premise) and wine tastings. You will also be responsible for training our wine servers.
DUTIES
• Coordinate the development, interpretation and implementation of all wine menus.
• Provide direction in the execution wine service standards throughout the dining room and bar areas.
• Recommend food, dessert and wine pairings for guests.
• Advise guests on wines based on their personal tastes.
• Inform guests about different varieties of wines and prices available in our wine retail store (Wine Cellar).
• Create a wine list and write wine descriptions.
• Ensure wines are served at the right temperature and within the proper glassware,
• Ensure Wine Bar and Wine Cellar are always stocked, presentable and organized.
• Anticipate guests' needs, respond promptly and acknowledge all guests, however busy.
• Maintain complete knowledge of: all brands, particular characteristics and description of every wine/champagne by the glass and major wines on the wine list, all bar menu items and prices.
• Maintain knowledge and strictly abide by state alcohol regulations, particularly those prohibiting service to minors, intoxicated persons and drunk driving.
• Train bar staff members on tools and systems relating to the wine and service.
• Attend wine and beverage tastings and seminars as available as part of continuing education to aid in program and skill development.
• Conduct wine tastings for staff and customers and teach wine courses.
• Perform all other service duties related to wine as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Certified Sommelier by Court of Master Sommeliers, WSET or equivalent, preferred.
• At least 2 years of experience in the wine industry (retail, supplier, distributor, sommelier).
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Professional appearance and demeanor.
• Ability to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays.
• High school diploma or equivalent. A bachelor’s degree in hospitality management, restaurant management, business administration or a related field is preferred.
• Working knowledge in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
• Working Knowledge of POS system.
• Able to effectively communicate in English, in both written and oral forms.
• Leadership Skills: The ability to lead and motivate a diverse team of staff members is crucial. This includes hiring, training and managing employees effectively.
• Customer Service Skills: Exceptional customer service skills are necessary to ensure guest satisfaction and handle customer complaints or issues professionally.
• Financial Management: Experience in budgeting, cost control and financial reporting is important.
• Marketing and Promotion: Knowledge of marketing strategies to attract and retain customers. This could involve developing and implementing promotional initiatives.
• Problem-Solving Abilities: The ability to make quick, informed decisions and resolve issues that may arise during the course of wine bar operations.
• Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for interacting with staff, customers and vendors.
• Time Management: Effective time management skills are necessary to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities efficiently.
• Adaptability: Be able to adapt to changing circumstances and remain composed under pressure.
• Computer Skills: Proficiency in using restaurant management software and standard office software for tasks such as scheduling, inventory management and financial analysis.
