Job Description

THE POSITION: The Senior Staff Accountant will support the organization by playing a critical role in managing East River Family Strengthening Collaborative ( ERFSC )’s financial operations. This role requires a seasoned accounting professional with a deep understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, an eye for detail, the ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining deadlines, and a desire to make a positive impact. The Senior Staff Accountant will ensure that the organization’s financial records are accurate, compliant, and up-to-date, while supporting ERFSC’s mission. 

 

The Senior Accountant implements the internal operations of the finance department. This includes training accountants. Provide financial reporting to the Director of Finance and or Executive Team monthly or as requested. Oversee the financial operations of the company, including accounts payable, and accounts receivable. Manage month-end and year-end closing processes. Conduct account analysis and reconciliation to ensure accuracy. Lead the budgeting and forecasting processes. Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets. Prepare financial statements and reports for senior management. Prepare and support information for the annual audit and Board's Finance committee and the external auditors reporting monthly or as necessary.

 

Essential Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Manage the organization’s accounting operations, including maintaining the general ledger, monthly balance sheet, income statements, profit and loss statements, accounts payable, and accounts receivable
  • Oversee the Accounts payable and support day-to-day accounting operations, including journal entries, reconciles bank accounts at least monthly, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks, and financial reporting. 
  • Collaborate with the Director of Finance to ensure accurate and timely submission of monthly reimbursement invoices to funders. Codes invoices, sets up new accounts, reconciles accounts, and closes the monthly books.
  • Reconciles cash disbursement accounts, payroll, customer accounts, and other financial accounts; manages accounts receivable collections.
  • Verifies and/or completes payment of invoices associated with accounts payable and ensures payments are charged to the appropriate accounts. 
  • Maintains vendor tracking schedule ensuring contracts are managed and renewed timely 
  • Assists with processing and documentation of grants and restricted donations including grant management/monitoring expenditure of grants and financial reporting on allocation of grant funds.
  • Track grant restrictions and grant spending providing updates to Program Managers/Supervisors monthly

Compliance & Reporting

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of internal control policies and procedures to safeguard assets 
  • Record, classify, and summarize complex financial transactions and events ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards and all relevant federal, state, and local regulations, including IRS requirements for nonprofits. 
  • Reconcile multiple balance sheet and income statement accounts at regular intervals, including year-end, and prepare related schedules 
  • Lead the preparation for annual audits, including gathering necessary documentation and working closely with external auditors 
  • Prepare and file tax documents with federal, state, and local government agencies. such as Form 990 and 1099s

Budgeting & Analysis

  • Assist with budget preparation and financial analysis, including regular budget-to-actual analysis
  • Work closely with program managers and other departments to provide financial insights and support for their initiatives.
  • Analyze financial information and prepare financial reports to determine or maintain record of assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liability, or other financial activities within an organization

Miscellaneous Duties

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

  Education and Experience: 

  • A minimum BA specialized in Accounting or Business Management 
  • 3-7 years of accounting experience, including month end close. 
  • Experience with grants management and fund accounting 
  • Applicant must be proficient in Microsoft Office 365 Suite, skilled in oral and written communication and customer relations and able to multi-task. 
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting and budget management is a must. Experience with federal contracts is helpful. 
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) principles and practices 
  • Proficiency in accounts receivable and accounts payable processes 
  • Knowledge of accrual accounting concepts. Understanding of tax regulations and reporting requirements. Ability to conduct financial analysis using Excel or other tools. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and calculations 
  • Proficiency in the use of computer programs for: QuickBooks (Accounting Software) required; ∙ Spreadsheets, excel, database; Adobe software experience a plus. Excel skills will be needed to be a strong performer in this role. 

 

Required Skills/Qualifications 

Must be highly detail-oriented, able to work independently while multitasking, with excellent skills in verbal and written communication. Nonprofit Financial Management and budgeting. A highly qualified candidate must have a familiarity with District, State and Federal Accounting/Tax laws.
