CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. This ORISE Opportunity will be in the CDC, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), Office on Smoking and Health (OSH), Program Services Branch. CDC is the lead federal agency for preventing and controlling tobacco use, through its Office on Smoking and Health (OSH). Established in 1965 (initially as the National Clearinghouse for Smoking and Health), OSH is one of eight divisions within NCCDPHP.

The mission of the Program Services Branch (PSB) is to expand and enhance the effective implementation of tobacco prevention and control interventions. PSB fulfills this mission by working with the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP), which includes state health departments, U.S. territories and jurisdictions, tribes, national organizations, and national and federal partners. PSB works collaboratively with the NTCP to build capacity to support successful interventions to reduce and prevent tobacco use.

Research Project

  • Train with Branch Chief and the Leadership Team, which includes collaborating and responding directly to Branch Chief to providing data analyses, creating templates for reporting, writing SOPs, quick guides, and one-pagers, creating process and guidance for quarterly and annual strategic planning and projections.
  • Train in other projects as needs arise to improve communications and technical assistance provided to OSH awardees in states, territories, islands, and tribes.
  • Learn to analyze monthly report data from Public Health Advisors and conduct secondary analysis to report to Branch Chief and Leadership team on compliance of reporting, and provide an overview of topics, updates, and concerns from the state tobacco control programs to better understand awardee’s activities and performance.
  • Gain experience in coordinate logistics for National Tobacco Control Program monthly webinars, including creating content for Branch Chief’s slide deck, creating annotated agendas for speakers, coordinating with technical support team, collaborating with and inviting states and partners to speak, creating and disseminating Zoom and SurveyMonkey polls, and compiling and analyzing yearly data to provide a report to internal staff.
  • Learn about and then collaborate on trainings on Smartsheet, a project management software, to support the increased use of Smartsheet throughout the Branch and within Leadership.
  • Train to provide answers to the Issues Management inbox to triage requests and provide help to awardees, national partners, other NCCDPHP divisions, branches, and leadership; tracks requests within Smartsheet to create a quarterly report of responses to provide to branch leadership.
  • Gain experience in creating and designing PowerPoint slide decks, one-pagers, quick guides, and talking points for internal use for understanding components of cooperative agreements, guidance documents, and record tutorial videos and webinars that walk through the guidance documents and expectations.
  • Train to design, pretest, and disseminate questionnaires and other data collection protocols for staff needs within branch via Smartsheet, SurveyMonkey, Google Forms, Doodle Poll, and others.
  • Translate research findings and deliver clear, effective communication of results and recommendations for various internal and external audiences for improving tobacco control practice and knowledge sharing.

  • Learn how to continuously assess and improve quality of communications, technical assistance, and data management to support awardee success in meeting their OSH-funded deliverables.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: November 1, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for five years, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
