About the Indiana Office of Administrative Law Proceedings (OALP): 
The Indiana Office of Administrative Law Proceedings (OALP) was established as a new state agency in 2020 to provide a central and independent hearings process for administrative cases with different Indiana State agencies. OALP has a staff of administrative law judges (ALJs) who hear disputes between certain state agencies and persons aggrieved by that agency’s action, as well as a team of Legal Assistants (LAs) who assist our ALJs with case management and data. Some of the state agencies for which OALP hears cases include the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA), the Department of Child Services (DCS), and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). Role Overview

The Office of Administration Law Proceedings is seeking a Legal Intern to join our agency in summer 2025. This internship is for a current law school student. The intern may work on projects such as rule promulgation, statutory and regulatory research, and the development of legal charts and guides explaining the administrative review process. Additionally, the intern may research legal issues for administrative law judges (ALJs) and observe pre-hearing conferences and evidentiary hearings held by our ALJs. This internship would be an opportunity to learn about the regulations and administrative processes of a variety of state agencies.


Salary Statement

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.

 

A Day in the Life:

As a Legal Intern for the Office of Administrative Law Proceedings, you'll gain valuable hands-on experience with:

  • Providing legal support to attorneys and legal divisions.
  • Performing legal research under the direction of staff counsel or administrative law judge.
  • Attending depositions and hearings and assisting with documentation processes.
  • Preparing, proofreading, or processing legal documents, such as summonses, subpoenas, complaints, appeals, motions, or pretrial agreements.
  • Handling arrangements for delivery of legal correspondence to clients, witnesses, and court officials.
  • Assisting with receiving and responding to inquiries regarding current hearings from attorneys, legislators, or clients by- telephone, email, and/or correspondence.
  • Assisting with organizing and planning hearing dates and securing hearing sites.
  • Assisting with maintaining law libraries, database systems, documents, and case files.
