Job Description

If you like diversity in your work assignments and are interested in working on projects from the Central and South Coast to the Colorado Desert Region of Southern California, this may be the perfect position for you! This Environmental Scientist position will primarily work in the Water Conservation and Land and Water Use Section conducting data collection, land use surveys, and a number of other work projects that contribute to the information contained in the California Water Plan Update; and secondarily you will assist in the California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS) program with weather station maintenance and data review. Fieldwork is balanced with time spent in the office compiling, analyzing, and organizing field data. Work may also include public outreach and emergency response.

Department of Water Resources (DWR) was established in 1956 by the California State Legislature. We manage California’s water resources, systems, and infrastructure, including the State Water Project, in a responsible sustainable way.

Special Requirements

A diversity of field work is part of the job, and the ideal candidate must be able to traverse rough and unstable terrain in hot and cold weather conditions. A basic understanding of the proper and safe use of power and hands tools is a plus. The successful candidate may be required to spend multiple days in the field, including overnight trips. Possess a valid California Driver’s License to drive a state or a personal vehicle to meeting locations and field sites and be able to travel statewide on day and multiple day trips.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:



The ideal candidate will be able to identify agricultural crops and have knowledge of the agronomic practices of the crops grown in the Central/South Coast and Imperial Valley; be familiar with agricultural, urban and wetland water use and conservation; have knowledge of, or be able to learn, land use survey techniques using Apple tablets; possess adequate scientific writing skills; be able to analyze and organize field data; and prepare draft reports. Working experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, GIS and statistics software is a must.
