Job Summary:

The Positive Youth Development Educator is a part of the Division of Extension Positive Youth Development Institute, with a focus within the Community Youth Development Program. The Institute supports programs that engage Wisconsin youth in opportunities they need to learn, lead, grow, and thrive.


This Positive Youth Development Educator position will primarily serve Fond du lac and Sheboygan Counties and surrounding communities. The Positive Youth Development Educator designs, delivers, and evaluates research-based educational programming and services aligned with the position's programmatic focus. This position includes three primary roles: 1) Capacity Building, 2) Collaboration and Partnerships, and 3) Education and Youth Advocacy, and is well suited for a candidate with strong community convening skills and who is seeking an opportunity to grow as a program developer that designs, facilitates and evaluates community youth programs alongside young people.


Capacity Building

  • Builds community capacity to address issues that affect youth, shape solutions, and strengthen systems that expand access and promote youth development outcomes.
  • Creates space for youth voice and action by coordinating and providing support to youth-adult partnership programs with intentional efforts centered on the Post-Secondary pathways, Youth in Governance, Youth as Resources programs, or another named direct delivery program agreed on with the program manager).
  • Engages young people in community youth development by fostering safe, culturally responsive environments that support youth organizing for community change.
  • Provides research-based resources and supports to youth-serving professionals to build capacity in their organizations and to help young people thrive.
Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Fosters meaningful relationships with a scope of stakeholders, including county departments, program partners, community-based and youth-serving organizations, and youth and their families.
  • Connects youth with adults in places and with processes where decisions are made about their community.
  • Cultivates partnerships with other organizations to expand programming opportunities in the focus area(s) of civic engagement/youth-adult partnerships/youth voice, restorative justice/practices, post-secondary pathways, community health).
Education and Youth Advocacy

  • Provides direct youth development education and training to young people and youth-serving organizations, including the 4-H program, utilizing a variety of delivery methods.
  • Facilitates and supports youth educational opportunities focused on youth leadership and advocacy in issues of justice and equity.
  • Ensures compliance with UW-Madison Division of Extension policies and procedures.
This position has a bilingual preferred qualification, which means a bilingual skillset is desired to bolster programming initiatives but is not required. A bilingual title designation and unique responsibility will be added to the final position description if the final candidate passes the language proficiency assessment.

Delivers and assists with planning outreach program activities, strengthens partnerships, ensures adherence to policy, and assists with program administration to promote stable and productive relationships between the university and local community. Strives to expand and ensure access to programs, facilities, and educational services to diverse audiences. May assist with tracking and managing the outreach program budget.
  • 25% Identifies, promotes, and maintains external partnerships to support the outreach program
  • 10% Schedules and secures resources and communicates logistics in support of an outreach program
  • 30% Delivers outreach program content and materials to community members
  • 15% Researches, develops, and facilitates outreach program content and materials
  • 10% Develops and evaluates curriculum and programs and provides recommendations for improvement
  • 10% Communicate plans, activities and achievements to Area Extension Director, Program Managers, partners, and relevant stakeholders

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Demonstrated experience in programming and/or service delivery related to youth development
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional work environments
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to effectively work with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity
Preferred:

  • Two years of experience leading, managing and/or evaluating educational programs
  • Demonstrated experience managing and/or supervising volunteers and/or staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts
  • Spanish or Hmong speaking, writing and comprehension skills; knowledge and understanding of Hispanic or Hmong culture. Language skills will be evaluated
  • Ability to apply relevant policies, procedures and regulations including reporting requirements and risk and data management
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other agencies, community-based services, or organizations to address educational needs

  • The primary accountability relationship for this position is the Area 12 Extension Director for supervision, compensation and benefits and performance reviews.
  • This position's primary programming focus is shared between Fond du Lac and Sheboygan Counties; however some programming will also be conducted over a broader geographical area.
  • It is expected that employees will make individual arrangements for transportation adequate to meet position responsibilities and essential job functions. Information about UW-Madison Driver Authorization can be found at
